4.1 MILES - DAPHNE MATZIARAKI (2016)
The short film, 4.1 Miles, by Daphne Matziaraki was nominated for the Best Short Film Oscar in 2017. This film is an eye-opening and heart-breaking piece that follows the work of a coast guard captain on the small Greek island of Lesbos. Its shows the constant attempts the captain and his crew make to save the lives of thousands of refugees, crammed into boats by people smugglers, who are trying to escape from the war and destruction in their homeland. These people are desperate to make the 4.1 mile trip from Turkey to Greece, therefore this small island has been overwhelmed with refugee crisis. It views the community participating in helping those in need when they return to shore and shows that people will go to extremes to help complete strangers. This film perfectly displays the struggles of refugees and their rightful desperation to seek escape from their own country by risking everything, including their own lives. Hopefully, this film will lead viewers to be more welcoming towards refugees and open there eyes to what is happening to other people in the world.
